Course Description:

Effective and efficient communication is key to any leader’s success.  Join Jerry Luckhardt, Associate Director of Bands at the University of Minnesota School of Music–Twin Cities, in collaboration with Forward Motion, to explore topics that will improve your score study, provide you a pathway toward more expressive conducting, and increase your students’ understanding of your non-verbal communication.  These objectives will be met over a series of three 90-minute synchronous sessions with Dr. Luckhardt and a cohort of other students.  Students must attend all three sessions to receive graduate credit.

This course is intended for music educators at any point in their career.  No pre-requisite required.  Students will need internet access to complete online content available at www.fwdmotion.org, a device capable of using Zoom, a video recording device such as a smart phone or webcam, and basic word-processing skills.

 

Course Outcomes:

Students will…

  • Explore strategies to improve score study 
  • Examine best practice for expressive conducting
  • Evaluate students’ understanding of non-verbal communication from the podium

 

Course Components:

This course includes synchronous online sessions, reflection essays, and self-recorded conducting samples..  Coursework instructions and resources will be found on www.fwdmotion.org and online classes will be held on Zoom.  Completed coursework should be submitted online via the interactive Forward Motion module available after registration and emailed directly to Dr. Luckhardt.  Students must receive a passing grade to receive university credit by earning “acceptable” or “excellent” on each assignment rubric.


 

Forward Motion awards academic credit in partnership with Dominican University of California.  Graduate-Level Extension Semester Credits/Units are primarily used for professional development or salary advancement and are transferable to degree programs only on the approval of the institution being petitioned.  The words credits and units are used interchangeably as geographical locations vary in terminology.  Participants are advised to obtain prior employer approval for use in salary advancement.  Dominican University of California is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).
